The CPSC is investigating around 14 fatalities over the past 20 years affiliated with sling-style baby carriers, including 3 deaths in 2009. 12 of the deaths involved infants younger than 4 months of age. The vast majority of these deaths involved a low birth weight twin, breathing issues, or were born prematurely. Slings can pose 2 distinct types of suffocation hazards to infants. In the first few months of life, infants have difficulty controlling their heads because of their weak neck muscles. The baby sling carrier cloth may press against the infant's nose and mouth, inhibiting the baby's breathing and rapidly suffocating a baby in just a minute or two. Additionally, when a sling keeps an infant in a curled position bending the chin toward the chest, the airways can be restricted, limiting the oxygen supply. Children have been known to suffocate this way as they are not able to cry for help. The CPSC has recommended that parents and caregivers make certain the infant's face is never covered and may be seen at all times by the sling's wearer.
