Careless And Abusive Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Wife, And Inspiration For Affirmative Change
It took more than a few years but Sarah finally made up her mind that she had enough with her husband's excessive and hazardous drinking. She was tired of seeing Keith come home after 2:00 AM from drinking instead of spending time with her and their three daughters. She was also weary from the third DUI Keith recently received. Furthermore she was exhausted from making excuses for her spouse when he couldn't show up for work on time due to his careless and hazardous drinking.
In a similar manner, she was worried about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Keith's careless drinking. And finally she was tired of the dangerous financial predicament into which he had put his family because of his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior.
One Friday morning when Sarah was thinking about what she could do about her husband's careless drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something to cut into the harmful cycle of Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the local yellow pages under "alcohol rehabilitation" and discovered a number of treatment clinics that were all located less than 15 miles away from where she and Keith resided.
When Sarah called each rehab clinic she identified who she was and stated that Keith, her spouse, was involved in careless drinking behavior. She also stated that her husband had a top quality health insurance program at his place of employment and that residential or outpatient alcohol addiction treatment would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health plan prescribed the rehab.
After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's careless and hazardous drinking, the psychologist in a supportive but resolute way told Sarah how she may have contributed to her husband's abusive drinking through the months and the years. How? Mainly by covering for him instead of letting him experience the consequences of his careless drinking behavior.
Stated another way, the therapist stated to Sarah that she may have been accidentally enabling Keith's abusive drinking behavior. The healthcare practitioner also underlined the point that Sarah could not control her husband's behavior. With the guidance and support of the rehabilitation team at the treatment facility, nevertheless, she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Keith's careless and excessive drinking but she could also learn how to encourage him to make an appointment at the treatment facility so that he could talk about his abusive drinking healthcare practitioner.
The good news was that after Sarah revealed this to her husband and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been quite concerned about his careless and hazardous drinking behavior and that he was quite relieved to discover that Sarah wanted to do something constructive about his careless and excessive drinking behavior. As a result, he made an appointment to see a psychologist at the local alcohol treatment center.
While simply calling a rehab center does not mean that a person's careless and excessive drinking behavior will stop or that a person will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is undeniably an essential step in the rehabilitation process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting therapy for his careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was substantially increased.
